Week Without Walls

This year, for Week Without Walls, the Grade 11 went to Hambantota to refurbish a Kindergarden school. We did many things during the two days we were able to spend working.

Prior to our visit, my friend Harini and I were incharge of organsing the items that ought to be given to the children at the pre-school as gifts. We went around Nugegoda to buy these items. It was a learning experience as we were required to stick to a budget and be able to get the maximun amount of usable products and be responsible for a quite a large sum of money.
We played with the kids there, this way I was able to learn more Sinhala words and learn how to play Sinhala games. I found out that many of the kids are rather smart. This is because during a game of musical chairs, where the music was when the teacher was singing. She stopped at every verse. The student would know where the verse ends, and find a chair near the ending. This was I have undertaken a new activity and was able to do it rather well, as I hardly play with kindergarden children. I thought that I was able to do this rather well.

After this, I painted walls, washed doors, painted doors and painted the below black part of the walls. This was a new experience for me as I learnt how to paint walls (Figure 1.2). (Criss, Cross, Up and Down [Thanks to Ms. Flynn. :)]) While Chrisni was cleaning the doors with water, I suggested that we should used soap or some sort of detergent, which helped, therefore the doors were cleaned faster and looked more clean. For painting doors a different paint was used (Figure 1.4), this was rather hard to use compared to the paint used for painting the walls. As this was enamel and when it got on our hands it took a long time to get off. We painted the edge of the floor with gloss paint, this was easier to use. (Figure 1.5) I developed new skills and worked collaboratively with others. (Figure 1.4)

Next time, I think that:

  • There should be more time put into planning,
  • At least one day should be used to dust the walls and doors, and the entire school,
  • More time should be spent in-order to do more work like fixing parts of the classroom,
  • Making the playground look more colourful,
